THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Oakwood Elementary School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Oakwood Elementary's School Story

  • Oakwood Elementary School opened its doors to students for the first time in September of 1957 as Lehigh Elementary School, a 22-room school featuring a six room wing for the county’s physically handicapped children.  The new school, located in the community known as Dundee, was often in the spotlight as the special education wing was the most modern center for students needing more specialized and comprehensive education in the state; featuring specialized rooms for speech, physical, hearing, and occupational therapy. The school operated under joint supervision by Anne Arundel County health and education authorities.  Soon after opening the schoolhouse doors, the PTA voted to change the name of the school to the Oakwood School.

Today, Oakwood Elementary School continues to operate in much the same manner.  Currently housing two Early Childhood Intervention classrooms and two Alternative Curriculum classrooms, the continued goal is to secure opportunities for students with disabilities to learn alongside their non-disabled peers.  At the same time, teachers and staff work tirelessly to help all students find the education and value in learning in an inclusive environment.

Through this college readiness system we work to accelerate student learning, utilize research based instructional strategies and provide meaningful professional development to our staff.  Teachers enhance learning through a focus on WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies. Oakwood is also proudly recognized as a Maryland Green School, and is committed to promoting positive environmental actions.
