THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Crofton Middle School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Crofton Middle's School Story

  • Crofton Middle School (CMS) opened in 1982 as a junior high school, serving students in grades 7- 9.  As the trend for middle schools swept the country, we became Crofton Middle School, serving students in grades 6-8.  We serve the communities of Crofton and Gambrills, MD, and our five feeder elementary schools include Crofton Meadows, Crofton Woods, Nantucket, and Crofton Elementary schools.

The population of Crofton Middle School has steadily increased for the last decade.  Originally a school of about 800 students, our enrollment now exceeds 1300.  Thankfully, our building has grown in conjunction with our population.  In 1998, eight classrooms were added, and in 2015 ten more classrooms were constructed.  For the 2019-20 school year, we will also have three “portable” classrooms to help accommodate our growing student  population.  Crofton Middle School is the second largest middle school in our county.

At Crofton Middle, our students benefit from smaller learning communities, and access to a broad curriculum. Many of our students are able to earn high school credit for math or world language before they enter ninth grade. The success of our academic programs is evident in the results of our AACPS Quarterly Assessments and our annual Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) tests.  Crofton Middle is consistently in the top five middle schools in AACPS for achievement in these areas.  In addition, our school has shown the highest growth among all middle schools in AACPS on PARCC scores.  We expect to maintain this high growth.

For years, Crofton Middle School students have transitioned to either Arundel High School or South River High School. This has meant that our students were divided and sent to different high schools upon leaving eighth grade.  Soon our students will have a high school of their own to attend. In August 2020, the construction of the new Crofton Area High School will be completed, and our students will remain together as they matriculate to ninth grade and attend high school.  This has been a long-awaited occurrence and the Crofton community is very excited to have their very own high school.  We expect that a strong bond will be established between the school communities of Crofton Middle and Crofton Area High School.
